What is my learning style? Test yourself

The reason why I teach Spanish using visual resources is because I consider myself a visual learner, and I believe that they work pretty well in my lessons. It gives students an extra support to understand the language and also, when trying to express their ideas either writing or speaking.

I’m sure that some of you haven’t heard about different types of learners or learnign styles. In this post, I would like to give you a brief explanaion about it.

Different learning styles and learners

Did you know that there are different learning styles? What does it mean? It means that not every person learns the same way and uses the same strategies.

Learning style: Preferences of people when learning. It’s the way we process the information that we receive more effectively. In our case, talking about the Spanish learning, it‘s related to how learners memorize, understand and assimilate the language easier.

VISUAL LEARNER

Students learns better by using mind maps, illustrated books, visual displays, symbols, colors, and data graphic representations.

 Some other common features of this kind of learners are:

• difficulties to understand verbal explanations
• difficulties to concentrate when reading long texts without images
• memorize using logical patterns, images and other ways of organizing the information
• remember images and videos better than spoken or written words
• write down things they want to learn – that’s how they remember them best
• take a seat at the front of the class so they can see their teacher’s body language and facial expressions
• use bright highlighter pens or markers to draw attention to important areas in their notes or work.

KINAESTHETIC LEARNER

They take a hands-on approach to learning. It is useful for them to see practical demonstrations of ideas in order to understand and remember them. They learn better by manipulation.

When studying at home, they prefer to be in a relaxing position rather than sitting on a desk. However, they remember lessons best if they walk around a room and say important words aloud.

AUDITORY LEARNER

Students learn better by listening, so they are good at paying attention to the teacher’s instructions and explanations. This helps them to remember and understand the information.

They discuss topics with friends, and they like to talk things through and listen what others have to say. Therefore, they enjoy group and discussion work in class.

Resources such as the podcast can be a very interesting way of learning for them. Also, they can record lessons to listen to them and revise.

READING AND WRITING

Reading and writing: Students need to read and write down the information to learn it. They fit in the traditional study method, such as using  text books, reading activities and writing the answers in their notebooks.

When they are studying, they usually write things down in order to memorize them quickly. They prefer writing essays than oral presentations.

But, do we belong to a just one specific learning style? Of course not.
People develop their learning style along their life, and many factors and experiences are involved in that process. Usually, we lean toward one of them. However, the three of them are present in the way we learn and understand things.
